Engine Surging

I have a 1950 Ford with a 88 Camaro 350 TPI engine. It has the Accel Super Ram set-up on it. I've been getting surging at idle. The accel system has no engine light or self diagnostic ability. So far I've checked for vacume leaks, MAP sensor and fuel pressure. As I hooked up the fuel pressure gauge and put power to it, the pressure went straight to 45 PSI. As I started the engine, it dropped to 36 PSI and surged between 36-38 PSI with the engine. When I killed the engine, the pressure bled off 20 PSI in 30 seconds. Is this a bad pump or regulator? Seems that pressure should always remain constant.

Hello mrkling!!

Chevy parts in a Ford????

Sorry, I couldn't resist!!

When you got the 45 psi reading did it hold, or did it also bleed off quickly???

When the engine is running your psi will drop slightly, due to the vaccum applied to the fuel pressure regulator.

Are you able to "pinch" the feed and return fuel lines???

If pinching the return fuel line holds your pressure check your regulator!!

If pinching the feed fuel line holds your pressure check your fuel pump!!

Re: Engine Surging

Thanks I'll check it out. The pressure bleeds off quickly, about 20psi in 30 seconds.
