Guys with billet alum timing covers, pointer?

I'm running a cloyes 9-221 cover on my 400. It's thick. Summit recommended a cheap $2 pointer, which

A) didn't quite fit, I had to manipulate the bracket into place
B) once tighted down, because of the thickness of the cover the pointer actually sticks out farther than the balancer, so I cannot read the timing marks on the balancer.

Anyone have any suggestions? Before I bend up a coat hanger
