Engine will no start. No codes but has engine light?
Engine will no start. No codes but has engine light?
On the way home from work today my firebird died on the freeway. As it's almost 4 in the morning i couldnt check to many things. I have work tomorrow and i would like to get this fix if i could.
What i know
91 firdbird v6
Engine turns over
Engine as 40+ psi fuel
Engine has good oil psi when turning over
Engine does not have spark.
New distributor and injectors about year ago.
Check engine light is on but when i check the codes shorting 5/6 pin it only posts code 12 over and over.
I unplugged the battery for a few minutes and it still has the check engine light on.
My first idea is to replace the ignition control module but the check engine light without codes is freaking me out.
Thanks for the help.

Check engine light that flashes only code 12 means the ECM did not find any faults with its systems. A check engine light that is always present with the ignition ON but the engine not running is normal. This does not mean there are no defective parts. If I were in your shoes I would replace the module. Did you hear a backfire or a "POP" when it died on you?

Napa tested my module and said it was bad i have one on order now. Thank you for your help. After driving it for years i never knew the check engine light worked like that haha.

hey i might have the same problem as you, maybe you could help. so i was welding on my car about a week ago and when i went to start it the next morning ot wouldnt. so its turning over but not starting.
no fuel coming from tbi injectors but can hear fuel pump turning on
same as you just code 12 over and over
no spark.
no spark when i tested wire that goes from ignition coil to distributor.
so heres the question... where you getting no fuel as well or just no spark? should i just take out the control module and take it to napa like you did. any ideas. thanks a lot

I didn't check the plugs to see if they were getting fuel i only checked the fuel pressure. I did see i wasn't getting spark so that is where i started.
My understandings is the module will also tell your computer when it should turn on the injectors. The car needs to know when to spark and when to put in the fuel. On a v6 it does this with the distributors ignition control module.
If i was you i would take it out and have napa test it. It should only take 5 minutes to pull it out then you will know if that was the problem.
If you have another engine other than a v6 you might have a crank shaft position sensor that could be dead. I would try changing this out as they're only 10-20 bucks. I dont think there is any way to test this sensor other than looking for cracks.

It maybe a good idea to check the resistance on your ignition coil. It is easy enough to do and at least you wold know that it is good. Ignition modules go out and often times there is not trouble code registered.
When I trouble shoot a no spark issue, I first test the primary and secondary resistance in the ignition coil, then the pick up coils in the distributor, and then I take the IM to have it tested. This way pretty much everything is covered.
