motor question

alright well after a long period of wondering i finally lifted the block to get the block numbers turns out my supposedly 383 stroker motor with 305 heads turned out to be a 305 with an oversized cam and not enough stall. SO after some 1 on 1 talk with the person that sold it to me and some 1 on 1 sparring. He did apologize and compensate some of his thievery. SO my old 89n iroc z i wrecked will have its motor pulled tonight and i will be building either a BUILT 350 or a mild 383 but i need to make sure i got some good things. SCAT rods SCAT pistons some crazy double hump heads ported polished smoothed everything. my 5.7 block out of the 89 and some 11:1 compression aftermarket pistons. Now my question is is it possible to use the cam in my 305 in my 350? i know its not recommended and it might go flat cause of new springs and stuff but can i use it?

Re: motor question

Technically yes, a small block cam is a small block cam and will fit in any small block. But not knowing the specs on the cam could cause some issues.

Re: motor question

well the came made power with the stall that was in the tranny but the cam is good at 2500-6400 rpm range peaking at 5700 so i always shifted at 6000 with my 350 im putting i called a motor shop and asked them what they thought an they said to port polish heads to the max screw in studs and to keep them for the 350 and pull out the cam lifters and everything and swap it ionto the 350 making sure that every piece went back to its original spot or i would roll my cam flat but i should be makin a **** ton of power once i finish the swap

Re: motor question

Thats standard. If youre using a used cam (as you are) you need to put the lifters in the same bore they come out of. IE, the #1 intake lifter of the old motor needs to go in the #1 intake lifter bore of the new motor. When you pull the cam, check for identifying casting numbers so we can get the exact specs to tell you if it will work well with your intended set up. I know comp cams stamps the model number on the backside of the last bearing.

Re: motor question

Not like that, but I bought a "perfectly running" 385 stroker from a member on here only to find out it had 2 cracked pistons. Everything else he said about the engine and its parts was true. He said he had no idea the pistons were cracked, and I was inclined to believe him. Lots of money later and the engine in rebuilt with all the old parts and new pistons, bored out even bigger, and in my car .
