I'm stumped on this one.
I'm stumped on this one.
I just got home from college about 2 weeks ago and my 91 Firebird V6 has been parked since December. It ran fine before I parked it, but now I'm running into all sorts of issues. The car runs great until it gets around operating temperature. I took it out on the highway and tried opening it up a little bit, something that had never been an issue. Once it gets around 3500-4000 rpm, the tach will spike down to idle and the car will lose all power. If I let my foot off the accelerator, it will regain power until I try to accelerate to around 3500 rpm again, it will do the same thing. Also, if I park the car and let it sit for an hour, and try to get in and start it again, it will start but then shut off after about 2 seconds. After waiting another hour or so, it will start up and run fine. My mechanic hooked it up to the diagnostics computer and it doesn't read any problems. If anyone has any input that would be fantastic.
UPDATE: The mechanic put on a new ignition module and that didn't help anything. He says its getting spark and fuel also. He's telling me now that he's gonna keep replacing ignition parts until he figures it out.

Re: I'm stumped on this one.
sounds like a shade tree mechanic, you dont try parts till you get it right thats wasting money. diagnos the problem first....... have you tried a fuel filter? gas dont like to sit up it goes bad...... pull fuel filter and see if its clogged and put some frsh gas in it........
This board has plenty of info on this very issue.
Just take a peak around and you'll find all that you needAdrian
Re: I'm stumped on this one.
Thanks for the responses. I actually had them replace the fuel filter before any other repairs were made, and it turned out the old fuel filter was fine. After putting the new one on, the car kept acting up. Guess I should have mentioned that in my post
Re: I'm stumped on this one.
After doing some research, I ran into a few common responses to the same type of question I asked..
There was a lot of focus on throttle positioning sensors and crank positioning sensors. I was concerned it could be the engine's computer.
We're still struggling with this.
