thinking of getting a 3rd gen camaro
thinking of getting a 3rd gen camaro
wsup boys this is my first post im seriously considering a third gen camaro. I got 94 z28 right now and ive grown tired of the lt1. Its such a B1tcH to work on i mean spark plugs and wires is a full saturday job and everything is just crammed you always half to take something off to get something else im just tired of it. And that optispark and waterpump man they must have been drunk when they engineered that. But anyway im thinking of selling mine for nice third gen, and I was thinking of getting an earlier one thats carburated because i was seeing not so good things about tpi. So id like to hear from some third gen owners about these cars and any heads up on troublsome spots and also how are they to work on thanks.

Re: thinking of getting a 3rd gen camaro
I dont own a fourth gen camaro but I would guess that the engine bay is probably just as cramped as the third gen. I spent a couple of weekends working on the engine bay of my 91 RS and it sure paid off. Running the wires through the fenders and taking out a few not-so-critical emmisions components has really cleaned up the engine bay. So i guess what i am trying to say is that a few hundred dollars worth of aftermarket parts and some serious elbow grease and these cars are not so difficult to work on, engine bay wise.
The Tuned Port injection system was desigened for low end thump, so if you are planning to modify the engine on the car then it will probably choke in the high rpm's.
If you are not a camaro purist then there are definatly some benifits to owning an earlier carbureted third gen. They may not look as nice but it is not illegal to add later year GFX as it is to convert a later year fuel injected motor to carb.
Just some thoughts.

I have owned both. LT1's are so much harder to work on. Motor is half way under the dash it sucks. Third gen is so much better. I LOVE TPI motors, so much tq. It's alot of fun.
get a TPI 350 car and swap a t56 in it or a nice stall in the auto and they are so much fun.

If you want to go TPI, get car with 350 v-8. They were only available on 1987 and up cars. 350 TPI never came with manual, just auto. Manual swaps are common since either manual or auto stock transmission need to be upgraded for high HP. Yes TPI may be a pain to make a high HP performer mainly due to stock intake limitations and the need to reprogram computer. However even a carbed camaro will need serious work to beef up transmission, rear end, etc. If you are not picky about having TPI, there are many cars that have 350 carbed engines swapped in. Just be careful that swap was done correctly and person didn't butcher wiring. Some people convert TPI to carb and it's a mess. I see a lot of cars on craigslist and even just driving around town. Many people seem to ask way too much for these cars - bring cash and talk them down. Let us know if you find any you like in your area.
