Just talking about the block itself and nothing to do with the heads, crank, rods, pistons etc. Dipstick changed sides. One and 2 piece rear main seals. Flat tappet and roller lifters.
There were probably a lot of different casting changes between the blocks over the years based on all the different casting numbers.

a big difference in the vortec block was the plastic timing cover which isn't interchangeable with the old style. it has a hole for the crank sensor.
