Speedo stoped working, now code 24??

Ok guys,

First off, i have a 1986 Z28, manual 305 carbed with 145 mph speedo.

So I had taken the gauge cluster out to do the LED mod, and everything turned out great.

I put it all back in, and everything worked, Even the speedo...

I then went a few places over a few days, and then seafoamed the car, and was wasting the tank of gas out after that on the highway and i noticed the speedo stopped working, im not sure when it stopped...either on this trip or a previous one between the time i put the cluster back in... Shortly after that I got a check engine light on the highway...and again im not sure when that came on either...

I then went back home and got under the dash, made sure the speedo cable was conncted..I even unconnected and made sure it snapped in...I also checked the code and got code 24...the VSS...

Speedo still doesnt work.

So my questions are...do you guys think this problem is related to me removing the cluster? or coincidence? does that code simply mean that the vss is bad? or what? Is it a big deal to replace? I dont really have the $$ for a part like that so if i could solve this prob without replacing it that would be awesome. It sucks because I was right about to go get a smog check...

Thanks guys!

If the speedo cable is correctly seated in the speedo head (rectangular male cable end into rectangular female speedo housing), the speedo should function as designed--unless the speedo head is faulty, the cable is faulty or the drive/driven gear(s) are faulty. If you're 100% sure the cable is seated correctly, I'd try loosening the cable at the trans tail shaft and turning it by hand to see if you get a reading at the speedo. If you do, the speedo and cable should be good. Look at the gears. If you don't, the cable is probably the culprit. Repair the above problem and the VSS code should disappear.

Hi, thanks for the reply!

Would the code come up if the speedo just wasnt connected?

I know the cable snapped into place, but could it still not be connected even though it snapped?

Also, where is the vss located?

Yes.

Possibly, but if the speedo functioned for a while, doubtful.

Rear of the cluster (a yellow box). You can see it in the following pic:
