1987 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am Dies

Hello my name is Aaron and I'm 15 years old and my car is a 1987 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am.

Recently, me and my mom drove up to the top of my road. There is a bump before getting on the main road. Well, I accelerated to get over the bump and get started to where I was going when, the car sputtered and completely shut off. So there I am, sitting dead in on-coming traffic. I coasted back into my road. I tried to start it again, and it started fine. It was fine the whole back down my 3 mile driveway. So I repeated this process and everything was fine until it died again at the same point. The bump is a VERY small incline where the main road has been paved more times than the side road.

My Car Info:
1987 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am
305 V8 5.0L Engine
No A/C, emissions control, washer fluid box, nor canister.
Carburetor

P.S. Carb was rebuilt in 2001. All fuses were replaced when I got the car so that no "almost-dead" fuses remained.

P.P.S. When I got home the second time, I gave full throttle in park to see if black smoke came out of exhaust pipes as had been reported by friends. The car backfired twice.

You said you were going up the top of your road, so a incline? Possibly not enough fuel and it all got pushed back to the back of the tank while on the incline? Is your fuel pump mechanical or electric?

most likely the fuel "pumps" are both mechanical and electric, mech on the block and elec in the tank

Re: 1987 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am Dies

Sorry for leaving the Q up. My grandpa found the issue. It's either the spark plugs or timing. AND, when I cleaned valve covers, I didn't put the gaskets back in perfect so its leaking gas too. When I fix the problem and it's running again I will post on here what it was and how to fix it for others like me that are bewildered by it.
