Will the real gasket please stand up?

I'm in the process of rebuilding my recently remanufactured long block. I have a question on the.. block - oil filter adapter - KC4 oil cooler - oil filter assembly.

The Engine gasket kit that I have has two gaskets that look like they go between the adaptor plate and the block.. see below..

But.. ive found a diagram online, ( cant remember where i got it ) that shows a gasket between the adaptor place and the kc4 oil cooler/exchanger.. see below ( item 22 ) the engine gasket kit didn't come with anything that looks like a good fit for here?

During disassembly I found no gaskets installed in either of those places, has anyone ever used gaskets here b4?

Can anyone recommend the correct way to install this assembly? I _hate_ oil leaks!

If it didn't have any gaskets before I wouldn't worry to much about putting some in. If you are really worried about it though you could smear a THIN amount of RTV silicon on the mating surfaces right before assembly. That stuff lasts a lot longer than paper or cork gaskets too. Just make sure you use O2 sensor safe RTV and spread it very thin so that it doesn't squish out and clog oil passages.

Number 22 in your pic is just like an oil filter gasket. Actually, some use an actual oil filter gasket there instead of the over priced oil cooler gasket.
