Need Help picking a Cam? Lt1?
Alright so this weekend im finally going into my engine swap which i am really excited for.
Right now my car is a stock Camaro RS 305 TBI and im swapping to a rebuilt 350 Carb with vortec heads and possibly an lt1 cam if i decide to go with that one.
Would an lt1 cam be a good choice to swap into? or should i go with something else?
Im really looking for the best performance and sound, i want my car to sound "cammed out" while im just idling at a stop light and im not sure if an LT1 cam will do that.
The swap will involve longtube headers as well, and i already have a flow master 80 series exhaust to go along with that.
So to narrow it down.
1) Would an LT1 be a good choice for performance and sound?
2) What Horsepower rating can i expect from that swap?
3)What are some other cams i can go with that might get me where i want to be?
Any help/suggestions appreciated
Thanks

Keep in mind
Vortecs "The maximum amount of valve lift before the spring retainer hits the valveguide seal is 0.530 inches. It is generally accepted that 0.060 inches clearance needs to be maintained between the retainer and seal (0.530 - 0.060 = 0.470 maximum valve lift). The Vortec heads, as they come with the large valveguide seals, are only capable of accepting a camshaft with a maximum valve lift of 0.470 inches." I'll add something else regardless if you were able to get over 470" of lift you still have pressed in studs. so you could either machine them for screw in studs or pin them.
If you ran a lt1 cam you'll be fine...
Would an lt1 cam be a good choice to swap into? or should i go with something else? As you stated performance and sound... so i doubt the lt1 cam is what your truly looking for.

The swap will involve longtube headers as well, and i already have a flow master 80 series exhaust to go along with that. What brand of long tubes, chances are you'll have to modify spots for clearance
So to narrow it down.
1) Would an LT1 be a good choice for performance and sound?
Not really, economized performance and sound
2) What Horsepower rating can i expect from that swap?
With what you listed (limited information) you'll probably make similar power to that of LT1 car. The vortec heads are based off the cast iron LT1 heads chambers int/ext ports BTW.
3)What are some other cams i can go with that might get me where i want to be? Depends on how your heads are set up. There are tons of good profiles out there.

Thanks for the reply.
Whats the horse power rating on an lt1 car(aprox?)
Is there any specific cam that you recommend? I heard about a zz4 cam would that be a decent choice?

Re: Need Help picking a Cam? Lt1?
Not a problem !
LT1 cars:
260 - 300 horsepower / 320 - 340 torque at the crank. roughly.
ZZ4 is a decent choice.
Duration @ 0.050" Lift: 208/221
Lift: .474"/.510"
Lobe Separation: 112
Still need to address the 470" max lift issues on the vortecs
here is a stock LT1 cam profile just so you have a comparison
Duration @ 0.050" Lift: 202/207
Lift:.450"/.450"
Lobe Separation: 117
