spark plug gap q's?

i was having problems with my car and someone said to check the plugs first. this was my first serious tune up since i got the car.

so i pulled the plugs and they are kind of black with a little bit of oil but nothing too bad.

but the gaps were between .045 and .049 on all 8! they should be at .035 according to the box of new plugs.

so would this much of an overgap have affected me that much? will i see better response or performance with new plugs properly gapped?
