1989 2.8L V6 firebird running condition is poor.
Hello all!
Dealing with our 2.8L V6 firebird, Canadian market. My dad bought it brand new. Rebuild engine installed in year 2000 because of oil consumption. Rebuild has done around 35,000kms.
Hope some folks could help shed some suggestions.
When I start the car it dies. I start again 2-4 times and it kinda idles. If I give the car gas it stalls. Like give it gas and it bogs down, tries to come up but dies. If I wait till the car warms up I can give it gas, at idle it sounds ok, but when I give it gas it kinda misfires as the revs slowly build
. Some backfire through intake if I SLAM the throttle.
I replaced the MAF when known working unit. I changed the wires, check the timing, replaced the spark plugs. The only think that made a little bit of difference was changing that timing computer (yellow box) up under the dash (passenger side). I also changed the ECU with known working unit.
This car has the most complicated and stupid layout, sensors, wiring, and serviceability of any single car I have ever worked on. GM should be banned from designing cars.
Sorry...rant!

That yellow box actually has nothing to do with the engine timing other than to tell the ECM that the car is in motion. It's called the vehicle speed sensor buffer box.
Check to make sure you don't have any loose wires at the ECM. Also, have the ignition module in the distributor tested if possible at a parts store.
BTW, you'll get more responses in the V6 forum.
