electric+mechanical fuel pump

to avoid using a fuel pressure regulator for a carburated motor with an electric fuel pump, could you run the electric fuel pump with a mechanical?
the reason i ask is i have a mallory fpr, but it started leaking, i want to eliminate it and run elec. pump to a mechanical fuel pump and still run the electric pump. i know it sounds ghetto but its just temporary.

Re: electric+mechanical fuel pump

Where is it leaking from? And running a mech fuel pump with the electric sounds like a bad idea.

Re: electric+mechanical fuel pump

its done all the time so the mechincal ones doens't have to work so hard to suck the fuel, the electric then pushes it, to it, but it should be one of those semi cheap ones, ones that can be used on a carb engine with no regulator, not a fancy 150 psi name brand ones. 3-4 or 5-7 psi

For $20-30 you can get a small electric at a corner auto store that will work fine with a carb n need no regulator.

And it should be as close to the tank as possiable.

I use to run a system like that on my 79 Duster as it got awful vapor lock when it got hot and it did run better. On a GM in the 80s big AC cars had a 3 line mechincal pump, the extra line is a return, with built in regulator, to send excess fuel to the tank.

Re: electric+mechanical fuel pump

I think he wants to run his stock electric fuel pump with the mechanical one, so that would be the bad idea. Using an electric pump designed to be used in conjunction with a mech pump, like the earlier carbed 3rd gens is fine, but it was also designed to run that way. And with going to get a low pressure electric out of tank pump, hes still have to drop the gas tank and remove the stock in tank electric one. And if hes doing that, he can just run the mech fuel pump without problems, or the need to run the AUX electric pump.
