How do you check a coil?

Ran before the heads came off. Re-assembled & now no spark from the coil. Any ideas?

Re: How do you check a coil?

I BELIEVE for

internal coil----( coil in cap )
pull a plug & re-attach the wire, lean it ( plug & wire ) against a head or the block, & watch for a nice blue spark to jump the gap while someone cranks the engine.
KEEP AWAY from fuel system!!
crank the motor for a few seconds.

external coil--
pull the coil wire from distributor,
lean it against a head or the block, watch for a nice blue spark to jump the gap.
KEEP AWAY from fuel system!!
crank the motor for a few seconds.

DO NOT TOUCH while cranking-- you will be thrown across the garage!!

Before you do this, verify your plugs are gapped correctly.

( edit )
Also, make sure the distributor is plugged in correctly for internal coil.

Make sure coil is wired correctly for external coil.
