Hello every one, I need some help or advise figuring something out. I have a 91 Z28 (TPI) LB9 305 5 Speed. The problem started out of nowhere. I last drove the car about 15 days ago and everything was fine. Two days ago I went to start the car and it turned on but it started to surge with a low idle and I felt a strong smell of fuel in the exhaust as well as a lot of black smoke, the tach would go from 0 rpm, shoot up to red line and then come back 0 but the idle still seemed really low. It does this over and over a couple of times and then it dies out. There is no check engine light on and the car shakes roughly while it idles. The thing I noticed last time I drove it; I was on the freeway going up a steap hill, and the car started to shake really bad I did not know if it was the road ( L.A Freeways) whick looked pretty bad or if the car was detonating. I could not make out any pinging over the loud exhaust. I was going @ 50 in 3rd gear. Thanks for reading my short book, I would appreciate any input on this before I go out looking for a repair shop. adjustable fuel pressure regulator
MSD 6AL Ignition

 

mine just did about the same thing. it turned out it was my m.a.f.. try unpluging sensors one at a time and see if it runs better, assuming u have already checked the basics, plugs, wires, vacuum leaks etc.. be carefull unpluging sensors, watch your wires.. i spent two days troubleshooting my tpi, didnt think it was m.a.f. no check engine light.. replaced it 2 times past 10 years and always had a light.. keep us posted....
