what to look for?
since i couldn't find a lounge section i figured this would be the best place to post. i'm looking into buying a 1989 IROC, my frist 2 cars were an 85 IROC and then a 88 IROC so this isn't my first one. But i remember a problem with both of them was the SES light would come on once it was at operating temp. I had both cars scanned and on both it was the o2, is this a common problem? i know some people with 3rd gens and they say this happens to them also. what else should i look for? It has been awhile since i've driven one of these things or checked one out. thanks for the help

Common? Perhaps. But, I wouldn't call a $30 part that fails after 60k miles a "problem". Just replace it. Personally I haven't had one fail, but I started off with a new one, and did other modifications that included a new O2 sensor (because it was convenient) before the previous one got to 60k miles.

Re: what to look for?
60K is just a guideline, like 3K every oil change. It doesn't mean the sensor is bad in 60K (or the oil), but the sensor can pretend it's okay and start skewing the readings shortly after 60K, or it can last up to 150-200K
I haven't had an O2 CEL since I've owned a thirdgen, and that includes the 70K already on the sensor when I bought the car, so I don't think it's too common. Coincidences are strong with these GM cars
