87 iroc engine troubles.

My 87 iroc started smoking today, so when i pull over and pop the hood, i find a lot of smoke and a broken belt -_- im not sure what this was to because the car ran perfect even without it. i cant take a picture of the engine or anything but if your standing in front of the car it is down on the front left of the engine. not 100% sure what this part is?

another thing, i had it out the other day and when i came home i heard a "gurgling" noise. so i pop the hood and see my engine coolant is bubbling and when i unscrewd the cap steam came out. my temps werent high on the gauges or anything. then when i came home after the belt braking today i noticed a puddle of anifreeze in my drive way.

Keep in mind it was 90 + both days...

Any help wiil be appreciated.

Re: 87 iroc engine troubles.

Belt sounds like smog pump - I'll bet the pump is bad, bearings froze up, thus the belt slipped on the non-moving pulley until it melted and broke. The added strain of the engine trying to run a belt against a dead pulley may have caused the overheating issue.

Re: 87 iroc engine troubles.

Have you checked it? Take the belt off and see if the smog pump spins - you should be able to turn it by hand freely (unless it's froze).

Any autoparts store will have it - autozone carries them $79.99 ($10 core)
