Man, it almost starts!

Well here goes. My son and I bought a 1991 RS 3.1ltr V6. I was told the fuel pump went bad, and when the PO installed the new one he forgot to put a small hose on it until after he had put it all back together.
"All it needs is that small hose"
I personally got the car to fire up with starting fluid before I towed it home with a rope.
After dropping the tank and removing and inspecting the fuel pump I didn't see any small hose - I think what happened is someone told him about the Pulsator and I believe some fuel pump kits include a small hose to replace that. The pulsator is still there.
The pump worked in a container of gas so I ohmed out he fuel gauge sender, burnished it (that fixed it) and reinstalled the pump and re-mounted the tank
No start - but it sounds like it wants to.
I have confirmed the fuel pressure at ~41psi with just the priming function.
I have jumped the oil pressure sender and confirmed the fuel pump running.
I am interested in the Pressue Regulator next but don't see any lines going to what I think is the Reg.
I am also preparing to confirm proper plug wiring.
I learned about all those things on this forum - THANKS
It really sounds as if it wants to start (not just straight cranking).
Sorry for the novel.
Any suggestions?
Bryan.

Re: Man, it almost starts!

I'd replace fuel filter while I'm working on it - a 15 min job.

Might check the injectors - you can check ohms on them - I don't know the numbers you're looking for, but a might help you there, or a post on the V6 section.

Re: Man, it almost starts!

Thanks, I picked up a fuel filter earlier today and we are getting ready to put it in now (pressure does not necessarily mean flow).
But first, I pulled the module from the Dist earlier today and the inside connecter (think it goes up to the rotor) had the whole bottom side broken off (the side facing down toward the bottom of the distributor).
The module passed 6 tests at my local Auto Zone so ............
I am going to Heat Shrink those wires to insulate them from the bottom plate test starting again and then replace the filter so at least I will know what the problem actually was (if it is either of those).

Thank you very much for your reply - will post with results soon!
Bryan

Re: Man, it almost starts!

Repaired connectors on module in bottom of Distributor.
Had module checked at Auto Zone - Checked good 5 tests.
Replaced Fuel Filter.
Sounds even more like it wants to start but won't.
Starting fluid in air intake will cause a start but sounds rough - that may be normal on starting fluid???
Don't know where to go next.
Magnetic pickup in Distributor OR TPI Or maybe weak coil???
Any suggestions?
Does anyone have a troubleshooting procedure?
I have a DVM but don't know where or what to measure for.
Have not confirmed plug wiring - still waiting for Chiltons Manual.
Thanks, Bryan.

Re: Man, it almost starts!

OK.
Plug wiring correct.
Good Spark.
Removed a plug for inspection - Carbon fouled but not terrible - Can smell some gas on plug but definately not soaked.
Cleaned and put the plug back in - tried to start again - removed plug again - can smell faint gas but not really "wet".
I am wondering if the injectors are opening?
Can anyone tell me how to tell? Do I have to remove the plenum that covers them to tell?
Seems like there must be a test to see if any of the injectors are being told to open??

Anyone??

Thanks, Bryan.
