the smell of gas fumes in my car

everytime i take my car on long road trips it always will break down and i suspected that it was overheating or something well it wasnt the temp gauge was reading alittle cooler. well last time before i broke down i would drive then give it gas and it would start to shut down but when i let go it would idle fine. but what im trying to say is whats wrong with my 85' trans am. is it not lighting the gas and over flooding it or what? it is a 85' trans am tpi 305 stock, thanks

Re: the smell of gas fumes in my car

The smell of gas fumes could be a leak near the firewall or the seal around the rear hatch is bad and not sealing.
