Sloved that horrible misfire /stumble after 3000RPM
I have solved a misfire problem that I’ve had since I bought the car. I noticed a lot of other people with a similar misfire/stumble that I was having… so I thought I would let everyone know how I fixed it to save some other some time and money.
It’s a simple fix
Mines is a 1990 Trams Am GTA with 5.7 L98
The Misfire/stumble: Slight misfire at idle but nothing much, after about 3000 RPM and up the misfire goes crazy, car stumbles and the tach jumps around a bit.
I was researching the issue on the forums and found other guys with the same problem but I couldn’t find anyone with an answer... most guys were just throwing parts at it to try and fix the problem but with no luck.
How I fixed it: First of all make sure your ignition system is up to par
Check your plugs, wires, cap and rotor to make sure they are all good and working properly. The problem is actually the connection from the pickup in the distributer to the ignition module. Pull off your ignition cap and you will see the ignition module with 3 connectors going to it. Two connectors on the far side closest to the firewall to the back of the car and another one closest to the front of the car. Even if they don’t look dirty, clean all the connectors with electric contact cleaner and apply a little bit of die electric grease to all the terminals. Put everything back together and try it out
My car is soo much faster now that I can go over 3000rpm without a crazy stumble
I hope others have the same luck I did with this problem

too many people overlook the distributer internals . i include myself as one of them . i had a problem that i traced to the internal module in the distributer last year . has haunted me ever since . i just have not felt real good as i feel a slight midrange hesitation since . anyway thanks for the up-date . with 185k i am going to soon replace distributer with a new item . cheers !!! good luck .
