Swapping stock '78 heads on to a vortec engine.
Alright to not confuse anyone I have two engines atm.
-'78 350 truck engine, with stock heads.
~Weiand Stealth intake
~750cfm edelbrock
-'96 350 Vortec engine, with vortec heads.
Will the stock heads and weiand stealth intake go onto the 350 vortec engine, with no problems? Or is there any differences between a regular gen I block and the vortec.
And what is the best bang for the buck vortec intake to go with my setup? How much is it going to be to rebuild the heads? Is there any clearence issues with 1.5:1 roller rockers on the vortec head/rocker arm cover?(since they are the 4 bolt patter covers.
Thanks in advance!

I admit, I'm confused.
Specifically, why? Why would you take off the best heads Chevy has ever made for the SBC, and put on the worst?
Don't do that.
By taking the Vortec heads OFF and putting the stock 78 smogger junk ON your late-model block, you have essentially turned it into a 165 HP 70s smogger turd. Bad idea.
Blocks aren't "Vortec". HEADS are. All heads will fit all blocks.
Vortec intakes won't fit non-Vortec heads, and vice-versa. I.e. your existing intake won't fit Vortec heads, and a Vortec intake won't fit your crappy smogger truck heads.
Leave the 70s motor entirely alone. Sell it to the next "greater fool" who always seems to be out there. There's nothing there of any value to you. IMO it is total trash, except for the block, and possibly the intake; but that only because there's always somebody that think a 4-bolt main block is better somehow, and of course an intake is an intake. All the rest of that, the heads and carb and short block guts especially, you couldn't even pay me to take it, that's how little I think it's worth.
Get your '96 castings renewed. Have the guides cut down so you can use better valve springs, or ante up for the "beehive" springs. That will allow you to use a cam better than the super weenie thing the factory used with those good heads. A good cam would probably be something like the Comp "503" grind. A good intake for that setup would be the Performer RPM Air Gap. A good carb would be the Holley 4779.
Most roller rockers will not fit stock center-bolt valve covers. The tube things where the screws go through won't fit down in between the rocker trunnions. That's no reason not to use good rockers; just, expect a little creativity or some $$$, one or the other or maybe a bit of both, to be required.

Re: Swapping stock '78 heads on to a vortec engine.
Nonononono. You are confused lol. I am putting the vortec block into a '90 camaro that I am going to sell. Since I am selling it, why not just swap the heads to what I want. It would save me from having my heads and intake laying around in the garage when I do it in a few months.
Also to clear some stuff up. My block (the '78 350 bored .30 over) Has 8k miles since rebuild.
The vortec engine has 120k and is not in amazing shape at all. And I am not going to break that down and rebuild that thing.
Also you can buy an adapter that goes from the vortec to the old style rocker arm cover. You need to use a gasket on each side which can cause leaking. I am unable to find the adapter, all of the ones I have seen were $80+, just for an adapter.
You were talking about upgrading the springs, I would need to have the guides cut down for springs. And could you give me a link on those beehive springs, I have heard about them many times but was unaware what they were. I was thinking about the performer rpm air gap to replace the stealth. And I am going to keep my 750cfm edelbrock carb for sake of keeping costs down.
Besides valve springs is there anything else worth getting built on the heads? Are screw in stud's not needed on a street car.
