Re: electric fuel pump

When i put an electric fuel pump on mine i used a carter
rotary vane type(forget what #,was back in the early
'90s) i mounted the pump to the engine in the same
place as the mechanical and used a bypass type
regulator so the excess fuel would go back to the tank
instead of putting a heavy load on the pump motor.
To control the pump an oil pressure switched was used
-there is enough fuel in the float bowl to get started
and get oil pressure.
This setup worked perfect and eliminated the high rpm
fuel starvation problem i was having
The carter pump was a little noisy untill the pump
vanes seated in.

.
Depends on pump type .
The low (6 psi ) pumps are designed to deadhead to the carb ; the high pressure (14 psi ) pumps require a regulator
Most elec pumps are designed to push from tank end rather than suck

Re: electric fuel pump

I had a non-regulated carter on mine for a few years and it worked great down to mid 11's until I went with FI and needed more than 7psi. I'd also recommend mounting the pump close to the tank.

Re: electric fuel pump

If it were me, I'd stick to the mechanical pump - easy, cheap, quiet, and plenty for a 350.

Re: electric fuel pump

I'm using a Holley "Black" pump with a mallory 4307M fuel regulator to feed my carbed 350.

Re: electric fuel pump

OReilly's and AutoZone sell one for around $50 that I have been using for years on my vehicles. You can order it from just about anywhere online though. AirTex is the company that makes them, also repackaged slightly cheaper as "BesTest" (or something similar).
One note on this though. Don't put it anywhere it will get very hot. The first one I mounted under the hood of my 1985 w/305 edelbrock lasted less than 10 miles before the heat cooked it. I warranted it and relocated it back by the fuel tank. I have been running it back there for several thousand miles and it is working great. I bought the lower psi model and at first used it with a Holley regulator to limit pressure to the Edelbrock. Recently I removed the regulator and just let it run straight to the carb and it runs exactly the same with no stumble or issues.
I run this same pump on a couple of my trucks and it works great mounted under the hood since they run a lot cooler underhood than my Camaro.

EDIT: Also, I have it hooked up to a oil pressure switch on my engine that allows the pump to run only when there is about 5psi or more of oil pressure. This way the pump does not run in the event the ignition switch is left on (accident, just using radio, etc). This has been working very well with no startup issues either.
