88 camaro fuel pump gone bad question??

i have an 88 sport coupe i just bought.
it needs a fuel pump so i was wondering if i could
put an in line fuel pump somewhere while leaving the bad pump in tank?
is it possible to put new pump in line and leave old pump in tank?
may be a stupid question, but don't know till you ask.
this will be the 4th. one replaced since i started collecting 3rd. gens.
they are a pain to change if you have to remove the tank.
it would really be nice to be able to install an inline without
dropping that tank.
thanks for any advice.

Re: 88 camaro fuel pump gone bad question??

You can, and it will run, but terribly. It won't go over about 40mph, it'll spit, sputter, cut off, and slow to restart. I wired/plumbed in an inline pump on mine when the fuel pump died out of town, just to get it home - it's an emergency thing to say the least.

To really functionally drive the car, you'll need to replace that dead pump.

Re: 88 camaro fuel pump gone bad question??

thanks newb,i guess i could do what you did just to save on tow bill?
i bought car knowing fuel pump was bad.
the car has less than 50k miles on rebuild 305,and it's a 5-speed.
i gave 1,000.00 for it.
i hope i got a good deal?
car looks really good,clean interior,etc.
it has the one year rear wing, and the factory z style wheels.
i was hoping to be able to fix car in previous owners garage
where he started taking the tank down...he got so far and gave up.
i guess i just as well get a roll back under it and bring it home
in the sick condition it's in.
fix it when i get it home.

Re: 88 camaro fuel pump gone bad question??

IM PLAN ON CUTTING THE SHEET METAL DIRECTLY ABOVE MY SENDING UNIT AND MAKING A TRAP DOOR. I WAS FORCED TO CUT THE TAIL SECTION OF MY EXHAUST AND CUT THE FILLER NECK TO GET TO THE SENDING UNIT. IM NOT DOING THIS AGAIN. NO BIG DEAL SINCE THE EXHAUST WAS TRASH ANYWAY. CAN ANYONE SAY SIDE PIPES ? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UfcnQeWDYRA

Re: 88 camaro fuel pump gone bad question??

CLOSER INSPECTION OF THE 4 HARD LINES LEADING FROM THE SENDING UNIT TO THE DISCONNECT JUNCTION ON THE FWD LEFT SIDE OF THE TANK SHOWS THAT CUTTING A SQUARE HOLE IN THE SHEET METAL DIRECTLY ABOVE THE SENDING UNIT WILL NOT GIVE ENOUGH CLEARANCE TO PULL THE SENDING UNIT OUT. IM SWITCHING TO SIDE PIPES PEAKING OUT DIRECTLY AHEAD OF THE RR TIRE. AT LEAST THE EXHAUST WILL BE CLEAR THE NEXT TIME I GOTTA DROP THE $#@!@# TANK.

I cut an access panel above the sending unit with a circular saw and a metal cutting blade, just be dam sure to set the depth shallow. The tank sits 1-3 inches from the metal.
