tach stopped working

hey guys, new to the forum as i just picked up an 86 trans am with a 350 4 bolt swapped into it matted to a 700r4. Anyways when i got the car the oil pressure gauge didn't work, temp gauge, tach or speedometer. Got a new speedometer cable and it still just jumps around, think i actually got a broken one, no square end on it just a wire..... anyways i would really like to get my tach working but don't know where to start....well i know the distributor but what on it? when the car is off the tach rests on the needle and will jump up to 0 on start and doesn't move from there. The guy said it was working till he started messing with the wiring for to get the wipers moving again...needless to say my wipers operate at one speed and one speed only. i really have no history of what was done to the car to get it swapped in. on the registration it says it was originally a V6 car and the old harness is still there mangled, with wires laying everywhere and connectors melted, i know she's a jewel lol. anyways i was hoping you guys could lend some of that vast knowledge. thanks!

Re: tach stopped working

White wire on distributor needs to have a clean connection all the way to the instrument cluster. When you play with the wipers does it do anything to the tach?

Re: tach stopped working

nope, wipers don't bother a thing. The gas gauge and volt meter still work, so the whole cluster isn't junked. I think its just the wiring because he did a real hack job when he swapped it out. would actually like to clean the harness up, cuz it looks bad.

And yes that is my heater line routed in a loop. I have no idea why they did that but i hope it was lack of line and not a busted heater core.....gonna find out today

Re: tach stopped working

Just wondering if he had spliced into the wiper circuit somewhere.

Re: tach stopped working

Well i think i found the wire..the connector that goes to the dizzy was cut and spliced into another wire. when i bought the car the guy said it had a hood tach on it so i think they spliced the wire to go to the tach on the hood. Now i searched and searched and this was the only white wire i found. now what i need is a picture of the proper connector that is supposed to go into the dizzy so i can steal it from another un-used connection or go find a connector from another car or at a shop or something. so if anyone can take a pic of their wire connector that would be greatly appreciated. thanks!!

Re: tach stopped working

I think it's the "ignition coil connector" on Rock Auto.
