Hi! I've removed a few things from my 305 tbi 88 base camaro (t5 tranny) this summer and now that it's getting cold, I've noticed that the heater won't blow heat.

First I thought that I just couldn't get it hot enough and placed some carboard behind the radiator (where the a\c condenser used to be) and that allowed the heat to rise, but even up past 220 degrees the heater was still blowing no real heat.

Other than all the smog stuff, I've removed the entire A\C. Compresser, condenser, the silver canister, and all the tubes in between. I even replaced the blower motor cover with one from a camaro that didn't ever have a\c. (so much more room now!) Ohh, also, I relocated the heater valve thingy a bit too. I cut the hoses so that it rests next to the blower motor now.

Is there something I've done wrong that messed up the heater?

If you can't diagnose a cooling system problem why are you removing anything from your car in the first place? Oh well - either way its most likely its a clogged/broken heater core if the engine coolant itself is actually getting warm. I hope you didn't remove that instead of the evaporator core....

 

Of course I didn't remove the damned heater core. Is there something I've done to you to cause you to insult me for asking a simple question or do you just simply not have the capacity to understand how a discussion forum works?

 

um since you removed your WHOLE ac system did you install the delete kit?

Check your inlet and outlet hoses to your heater core with your hand. It should give you some evidence of flow to the heater core (hot vs cold). If it is pretty cool, you aren't getting flow. If it is luke warm, you probably are getting some type of flow. You should also have some type of heater control valve. My guess is that it is vacuum operated. Years ago on another car, I put a simple cut off valve in the heater hose line. Vacuum operated doors didn't seal well and I had hot air coming through in the summer. When I needed heat, I just popped the hood, turned the valve and off I went. I ended up leaving it open half the year and closed half the year.

 

What do you mean by delete kit? I put a delete cover on...

One other thing to check. On your temperature control in the dash, the hot/cold selector should be controlled by a cable. That may be bent/broken/popped loose. That would be pretty far fetched, but it is possible. Had that before and it took me pulling the dash apart to find it. My buddies car had the stereo stolen and they weren't too kind to the dash in the process. They damaged the cable retainer and clip in the process and he repaired the dash before he needed heat.

 

Yea, it's always had the heater control valve, however I relocated it by shortening the tubes. The tube length wasn't necessary for effective heating was it?

 

Actually, I've been messing around with my temp control piece lately. I'll definitely give that a check, thanks.

 

I agree, tube length makes no difference on the operation of the valve or the ability to provide heat. The valve could be seized shut.

 

Sorry - I meant heater hose length has no effect on its ability to provide heat. I want to stay away from using tube which might refer to the aforementioned removed components.

Where did you get the delete from?
Does the fan work in all speeds?

 

I got the delete from a camaro in the junkyard. Yea the fan works on all speeds, the little pack of coils from my old box fit bolted into where the one from the junkyard went so I reused it.

I just noticed that the vacuum tube running to the heater control valve has no suction to it. I traced it back and it doesn't even run to the TBI it runs into some wiring pack. I'm gonna try plugging it into an actual vacuum port and seeing what happens.

So, anyone know about the vacuum tube that runs to the heater control valve? Is it supposed to be connected to a constant vacuum? Where does it come from?

 

I don't know the answer to that. I would check a vacuum diagram. Do you have a Chilton or Haynes manual? Even better - a motor manual. Let me go check mine real quick.

 

Okay, from what I've been reading, this little guy here only opens (and allows water to the heater system) when vacuum is applied. That leads me to believe that the vacuum shouldn't be constant.

Now I just gotta figure out what vacuum source is supposed to activate it.

 

None of my " fun " cars had A/C or heat.

When you re-located the valve, could you have accidentally
broke // cracked the fitting for the vac line?

 

Yes actually, lol. But I fixed it right when it happened. I just tried holding my thumb over it while a buddy messed with all the heater controls and felt nothing. So either there is a clog or something in the line, or the heater controls have nothing to do with when the heater control valve vacuum line gets its vacuum.

 

Mine goes from that valve into the wiring harness over by the heater box. Where it goes from there.......?

 

Search some of the threads. I believe it goes to a vacuum canister under the dash that hooks up to your temp control level on the dash.
