Chevy 350/Transmission

Ok here's a question about Transmission and Engines.

My research shows that the engine in my 89 Firebird Formula 350 is a Chevy engine. (not the typically POB)

Does this mean that a 700r4 from a Chevy will fit???

and how would I tell this from looking???

Re: Chevy 350/Transmission

Yes you are right the firebird does use a chevy 350. Would a 700r4 from a chevy fit? For the most part yea. For example a 4 wheel drive 700r4 will bolt up to the motor just fine but will not work for you as is as it was designed to have a transfer case bolted to the transmission. Also the F body 700r4 although fundamentally the same as every other 700r4 has a different tail shaft housing for the torque arm to bolt to. Also there are some 700r4s that are better than others. The early 82-84 700r4s had some serious design flaws that gave the transmission a bad reputation. Later ones are fine but the newer the better. Ideally I would try to find a 700r4 from another camaro or firebird and check the date code to make sure its not one of the earlier ones.

Thank you That info is what I needed. Theres a guy selling one on Craigslist that is new Goodwrench. http://tucson.craigslist.org/pts/1993095492.html

If it is new then the price seems right.

All thirdgens have Chevy engines (except the Buick V6 in the TTA). Pontiac stopped making engines in 1981, so finding one in there would be very atypical.
