Which choice do i take?

OK for 300$ i could buy a 400 crank already turned for a 350 rods and 383 stroker pistons for 5.7 rods and make a 383 with my stock heads ported out a th350 trans and a 3000 stall. Or i could for 300$ get a http://www.summitracing.com/parts/HRS-110265/ and screw in-studs since i already bought the stuff for 550 lift for my heads with the same th350 3000 stall and ported 083 heads? which one would make more power?

it all depends what cam would you run going 383, if your not on a budget why not do both?

If your budget is $300, and the crank, piston and rods cost $300, you're not going to have anything left for afford the rings, bearings, balancer and flywheel, or for the balancing work you'll need.

Re: Which choice do i take?

well with the 383 your going to get more torque a good bit with a stock cam, that cam would be a bit large if the pistons are stock you should have about 9.3/9.5 compression when they say 10.0+ they tend to mean it I found that out the hard way. take a step down on the cam if you go that way. with the cam swap your going to extend your RPM range and boost your HP more than going to a 383 or you could always do the 383 and swap a cam later.

Re: Which choice do i take?

I wouldn't buy A DAMN THING. I'd choose to put the $300 in a bank account, and start adding about $100 to it every month; then come back here in about a year and ask the question again.

Re: Which choice do i take?

sofa i didnt ask for an alternative. This is now my ONLY car it blew the motor it had in it and i already bought bearings the pistons come with moly rings if i choose to buy them. And about the compression issue my compression will measure out to 10.4 to 1 my heads are being milled 20 thousandth and im using a 19 thousandth compressed thickness head gasket from gm performance. The cam is perfect for my setup i was just wondering which route i should go first and after thinking on it for a while i decided to go with the camshaft. Basically if i buy the 383 pistons and crank i will run into a rebuild quicker than if i were to go the cam route buy the crank now and wait on the pistons until a rebuild is nessecary then when it is simply put in the 400 crank and buy 383 pistons for my 5.7 rods. Thanks for the info Monster and i already had everything covered i got 3 400 smallblocks under my bench one of them being a 4 bolt main in my garage flywheel and balancer on all of them plus my dad does balancing work so no charge there. Ill be sure to let everyone know how it goes time to get dirty then drag strip
