My Camaro starts and then bogs down and dies
My Camaro starts and then bogs down and dies
I have a 1989 Camaro 5.7L. I was having idle and starting issues. I took it to a mechanic and he told me I need to replace the fuel injectors. So I did, this fixed the idle issue, but the starting issue still exists. About once every other week the car will start up, the engine will rev up, and then die. It may happen twice in a row, but usually only one. On the second or third try it usually starts up and runs fine for another couple weeks. The fuel pressure has been tested and is normal. Any Ideas??

Even though you may not have a SES light on constantly, pull the codes. It sounds like a tps or iac.

What happens when you start it and rev the engine? Does it stay alive or still try to kill itself off?
Have you tried using seafoam in your tank, crankcase, and throttlebody? Reason I ask is my car sat for ages and needed fuel injectors replaced. i finally ran a seafoam treatment for it and it cleaned up a lot of issues with starting and idle.
Try the seafoam, it may not help but it cant hurt.

The IAC has been replaced. When I start the engine and rev it, it will continue to run for a few seconds, but it is going to die eventually. I usually just let it die, because i know that in the next few tries it will start up and run great. Strange problem. I have not ran seafoam through the system. Im not very familiar with it but i did run several tanks of lucas fuel system cleaner through it before the injectors were replaced. Thanks
Re: My Camaro starts and then bogs down and dies
Get seafoam; ive heard bad stuff about lucas but seafoam is GREAT.
the way you do it is either a half/full can in the gastank (may not need to after the lucas) a half can in the oil (just unscrew your oil fill cap and pour it in) and then half a can gets sucked in via the vacuum hoses. I used the charcoal filter line from the canister to the intake manifold to suck up my can. You can also try spraying the inside of your throttlebody and plenum with Deep Creep (seafoam depcreep).

we sell seafoam, it is one of the best products out there, but we always try to mention that the results are dependant upon
the condition of your injectors and may just be a temporary fix. If all else fails we will be more than happy to check your injectors on our bench.

Re: My Camaro starts and then bogs down and dies
hey all,
does anybody think this issue could be related to the ignition switch. Today i went to leave the gym and it wouldn't even crank over. Moved my tilt wheel up and down a few times and wiggled wires on the steering column and it turned over and started. I plan on replacing the switch but i was wondering if this could be the source of my stalling.
THANKS

Re: My Camaro starts and then bogs down and dies
The intermittent nature of the problem is puzzling. TPS or ign switch make sense but obviously they werent the problem. The fuel pump is controlled by the relay and, after starting, by the oil pressure safety switch. The switch will prevent fuel pump operation and/or shut the fuel pump down if oil pressure drops below 5 PSI. It will also prevent fuel pump operation if it or any of the circuits that support it are faulty. Try testing it by wiggling the wires at the back of the intake manifold. The OP sender/switch is at the rear of engine, just below the dist.
It is quite strange though that it only happens every 2 weeks. Another possibility is the VATS system. There are a few ways it could be failing. And it is quite possible for the module to allow starter engagement and not send the signal enabling injector pulse as these are two seperate functions of the module. To verify this failure, you would want a scan tool or a scope to verify either fuel enable "no" on datastream or loss of the digital signal on a scope.

Had same problem with my 91 rs, ended up being the map sensor. the vacumm had dry rotted by throttle body and was sucking air. after replacing that car ran like a dream.

Good call on the MAP hose. MAP or MAF sensor input being off would definitely cause the engine to flair up and die. Something to look at for sure.
