removing smog equitment on 86 firebird 305 carbed

Passed emmission the easy but expensive route if you know what I mean. Anyway, I have a chevy 350 engine that I want to swap in. I am using the stock q-jet, starter, and distributor from my car. I am also having a holley carb beign rebuilt that will be available the day after christmas. I would like to remove all the emission equitement that I can to clean up the engine bay. The 350 engine does not havbe a smog pump as it runs with only a alternator, waterpump, and crank all using the v-belt. I also, have no idea how to hook it up to my powersteering pulley, cant find a v-belt long enough. Anyway, what are some of the smog equitement that I can get rid off that will still allow my car to drive for the next 3 weeks. After that all smog stuff is going, except for the distributor since there are wire harnesses that come out from it going to the firewall. can i put an aftermarket distributor on my car and still have the rpm tack work. not sure since aftermarket performance hei's dont have the wire harnesses running into then from the car.

The answer to the distributor is yes, just drop a vacuum advance HEI in it from an older Camaro and it will plug right up and the tach will work just fine. That being said, I know you know that de-smogging is illegal but I have heard you can just unplug the computer, put a non smog carb on it and a vacuum advance distributor and you're on the road. I also have heard that you can remove the air tubes from the manifolds and put plugs in them and remove the smog pump altogether. Just a matter of getting the correct sized belts at that point.

So, I can unplug the computer under the passenger side dash and my car will still work.
heres the link to the hei I want to get: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/SBC-B...item4cf2e37143

just wasn't sure if the rpms come from the wired that come out of the hei. usually in older hei's the wired run from the body of the hei to the cap but on my car it runs from the cap to the firewall. Just curious, but how does the rpm get its reading. thanks

yes, just unplug it and everything will work just fine as long as you are not still using the computer controlled carb on it. We put a Holley Street Avenger carb and a vacuum advance HEI on our 82 we had and it ran much better than it ever did with the computer controlling things.
