Factory spider and dogs bones not good past 6k
Well, im in the process of building a 383 and thought I would save some money by going with a late model factory roller block so i dont have to buy expensive reto fit lifters. I talked to a custom cam grinder and he told me if im planning on turning over 6 grand I need to ditch the factory spider and go with link bar lifter setup. he said the valvetrain would come very unstable at 6k. Im planing on turning about 6200-6400 with the motor. has anyone had this problem?

(GMPP # 17120735 roller lifters as used in the late HO roller engines)
Correct valve spring pressure is what keeps the lifter seated on cam
Stock spider and dogbones only serve to keep lifter square on cam lobe; do nothing for valve train stability AFAIK

Dittos to the above post. On my engine dyno runs we went up to 6800 rpm with no problems. I don't know where your cam grinder got that idea. I am running the LS-7 lifter. As the above poster said it only keeps the hydraulic roller lifter from turning in the lifter bore. In our club we have motors regularly going into the lower 6000rpms with no problems.

My dads 350 tpi has been sailing past the 6k mark for 15 years now, no issues at all. Right now the rev limiter is set at 6800, been there quite a few times. I agree with the above, the bars themselves dont move in use (at least they should not) so it should have no bearing on the valvetrain at all.

Things like that will have me finding another builder. I only let builders do what I can't, and do it as I specify, or give me a good reason for doing otherwise. All I ask of a builder is to be responsible for their workmanship and materials.
