Alt. Belt Problem ! Please Help !
Alt. Belt Problem ! Please Help !
I have been through 5 different belts in a few months! I just put in the GMPP 350 crate in it and ever since I got it back it has been throwing them or just plain tearing them up ! From the top, by the alternator, the belt doesn't LOOK out of alignment but as you follow the belt down while it i running you see it go crazy toward the crank pulley...
Yesterday I put on a new alternator and a new belt....that belt lasted , wait for it !!!! .......5 MINUTES ! Then my car broke it , and spit it's smoking carcas onto the pavement.
PLEASE GIVE ME AN IDEA WHAT IS GOING ON !

You're either out of plane or the alternator is mounted crooked. As a quck check just sight down the edge of the alt pulley to see where it's pointing. It should be pointing at the same place on the crank pulley. If it's not, something's out of whack.

For a complex problem that requires a full page description of the solution, sure, I can see adding pertinent information to that thread. But, to bump a 10 year old thread to tell someone to use a straight edge to check pulley alignment? If someone needs to be told to check the pulley alignment when the belt keeps falling off, maybe they have no business messing around with it in the first place.......

I have to agree with you for the most part....But messing around with stuff is how some of us got started. Do you think I got to this thread by digging 10 years back? This is where a search brought me and I never did find what I was looking for because Im distracted too easily and my search skills are ... not so good. I also suggested using FHP ( fractional horse power ) belts, typically used in outdoor power equipment ( lawn mowers ). They are made to run out of alignment. My pulleys ( nonserpintine ) are at least !/4 inch off due to the Ford power steering pump.( still havnt found a bracket to mount a Ford pump to a SBC ) During the hill climbs I hit near 7000 rpm ( which is way out of my power band ) with out any issues. I could suggest "go buy all new brackets, pulleys and accessories" which seems to be the advice most given for any repair today. Sadly there is more people replacing parts then there are repairing them, but I digress. Perhaps now that I have added more pertinent/relevant information this will be useful? Is there a better way to check alignment of pulleys other than a straight edge? Really I dont know. Im sure NASA has a tool for it but can I afford it? lol.
