91 z28, odd starting problem
91 z28, odd starting problem
auto trans, 305 tpi
this happened at my work last night, i drive about 10 miles on the freeway to work, and park in a closed structure.
all the lights worked when i put the key in, fans started any everything. but it didnt crank at all, the gauges all went up, everything happened normally except for the car actually starting. not even a little crank or anything, just silence. i try this a few times and decide to walk to the store. about a 15 minutes interval, i get back, smoke a cig, and the car starts right up....
what kind of insane problem is this? it does smoke a little on start up, due to leaky valve guides i beleive, could this have an effect on the start up?
and help is appreciated.

Does the security light flash when it won't start? If so then it is something to do with your vats system and it didn't like your key. If not then I would be guessing ignition system. Maybe a bad starter solenoid or an ignition switch.

I would suggest looking into the VATS security system before you throw any parts at this. New starter and/or ignition switch will do you no good if the VATS module is bad. It is most likely just the contacts in the ignition cylinder. They become stuck and fail to make contact with the resistor pellet in the key. Try wiggling the key in the cylinder to see if you can bump them loose.
