Smog Failure
Smog Failure
I smogged my car yesterday and everything passed except for the ignition timing. I guess it was set to 10 degrees instead of 4. The numbers for NO and I believe it was HO were extremely high. Could timing raise the ppm numbers that much. I going to try and borrow my uncle's timing light this weekend and set it myself, any tips?

Short answer - yes, timing can affect smog. By how much will of course vary. I have had the same issues and had to re-time the engine and re-adjust the carb to get it through smog check here. What engine and induction are you running?

Post a pic of your emissions sheet may help us as well.
Timing, cold motor, cold cat couls affect you HC's
Bad EGR could hurt the NOx

With cell phone cameras all over I used to think everyone at least had a camera until I asked for pics of some parts. The guy responded that he did not have a camera. It said "sent by iphone". I asked "that is such a great iphone and it does not have a camera? My razr does." He responded back "I don't have the app". LOL!!!

Zipping a jpeg is pretty pointless as a jpeg is already compressed. Plus more people will look at it if they don't have to unzip something. Just out of curiosity. What state are you in? I have to try and pass NJ this spring and I am always nervous going in.

Re: Smog Failure
Federal and California emissions usually have a different set timing. The station said 4 then set it to 4. Or if you can read you emmisions label and it says ...EPA and California.." set it to what that states and make sure the smog guy knows that.
Your NOx is super high. Check your EGR. Unplug the vacuum hose then reach under the disc it was connected to and with your fingers push up on the diaphram. While holding it up hold your thumb over the nipple where the vacuum hose was and release the diaphram. If the diaphram drops then the EGR is bad and needs replaced.
If it does not drop then take it off and clean the carbon off of the bottom. May need a new gasket when reinstalling.
Then consider replacing the cat. Your timimg set right will help but the cat also greatly reduces HC (along with NOx)

Re: Smog Failure
thanks for the replies guys, I'm in California so the emissions are pretty strict here. Didn't mean to compress the file, I was using the macs at school to upload and I'm used to using windows. The cat was replaced a couple of years ago but I'm thinking it might have been defective
I've got so much going on with this car that it would not surprise me if the egr was bad. My car is running rich so maybe the timing and egr would eliminate the fuel smell.

I could see Fresno on your smog print out
Check your EGR, its function is to reduce NOx. And adjust your timing. After that consider a cat. I doubt its defective but running rich is a lot of unburned fuel going into it.

Re: Smog Failure
Its really not as bad as some may think. I would say the worse part is, just about anything aftermarket needs a CARB EO number. Basically that is the manufactures paying the state for a number and saying their parts don't raise emissions. Not everything though. A TPI throttle body would slide by but an exhaust would need the EO number.
We just learn how to get around it.
Now I was surprised when I seen Arizonia smogging motorcycles. Knock on wood, California has not done that.
