Wiper squirters?

Hey gang, I'm wondering why my squirters do nothing. When you push the tab forward for the squirters you can hear the pump kick on but nothing comes out. I've checked the line in the tank and its clear of obstructions and such. Anyone shed some light on how this works? I'm assuming the pump draws it out of the tank into the pump then back out other hoses to the squirters. Is it more than just that?? Thanks in advance!!

It is about as simple as you stated. I have had several vehicles that have done this. Sometimes you have to replace the hosing to the wipers. Small or pin holes can form from deterioration over time and cause the vacuum system not to function properly. At least your pump is working.

Awesome! Thanks a ton. Does the pump need to be primed before it will draw the fluid? I've read it does but the replacements state they are self-priming but must be primed before install. Its a bit confusing. If so what is the best way to go about priming the pump??

I am not sure about the priming, but just like any other pump, close off the outlet to the wipers by pinching your line and run the pump for a short amount of time and that should prime it. Hope this helps.

Re: Wiper squirters?

Have yo tried to clear out the nozzles?
I take a 10 gauge wire and pull a strand or two out of it and run it through the nozzle tips.
You can easily tell if its a clogged nozzle by pulling the hose off it and running it.

Re: Wiper squirters?

Take the pump apart and the reason will become INSTANTLY obvious.

You will find that it consists of 2 plastic blocks, 2 O-rings, and a rubber flapper valve. You will observe that every rubber piece has turned to wood, and every plastic piece has crumbled to dust. You will attempt to buy these parts and discover that GM thinks the plastic has the same value as gold and the rubber the same as platinum. You will gulp, buy it anyway, and put it on there. It might work, but probably not; if it does, you will love it. (Don't hold your breath, there's other things about that system that also fail) If you're REALLY lucky and it ever works AT ALL, it will work about maybe 3 times when you test it, and then the next time it rains and you really need it, you will discover it has failed AGAIN, just like it did when the car was brand-new.

You will then forget the stupid factory pump and its crappy design; and go to AutoZone or wherever, and get a "universal" vane-type (whirr) electric pump that THE WHOLE THING costs about $12, or less than half of what the repair parts from the stealereship cost for that idiotic guaranteed-to-fail OE piece of trash. You will mount it right next to the horn, wire it up to the wires that go to the existing pump, and connect its input to the hose that comes from the tank and its output to the hose that goes to the squirters, bypassing the moronic factory thing altogether. You will then have a pump that will WORK when you push the button, EVERY TIME, for a long time; and that you can replace easily and cheaply at any moment, at will, without having to worry about stuff being discontinued, tracking down part #s that have changed, waiting for special orders, or paying the $$$cover charge$$$ to the goon at the door just for the privilege of being allowed to enter the hallowed sanctum of the GM store's parts dept.
