Oil pan gasket replacement

Hello. I want to replace the oil pan gasket in my 88 Camaro (2.8L V6). Can that be done without pulling the engine and completely removing the oil pan?

The reason...the timing chain was horribly stretched and actually jumped teeth...repeatedly. Once the timing chain cover was removed, with the crankshaft timing mark at 12:00, the camshaft mark was at 9:00. Upon removing the timing chain cover, I found that the front upward curving part of the oil pan gasket had been broken in the past and patched up with RTV.

Thanks for your help.

I don't know specifics on the 6cyl motors - but I've done it on a 305 V8 - I took the motor mount bolts out, and jacked the motor up just enough to get clearance for slipping the pan out.

Re: Oil pan gasket replacement

Thanks. I like that idea, and that "may" be within my limited abilities. What do I need to watch out for if I attempt this? At what point should I quit jacking the motor up to prevent breaking something?

My other thought is to just pile on the RTV, but I understand the oozing on the inside of the pan might not be a good thing in the long run. Thanks again.

Re: Oil pan gasket replacement

Watch the distributor against firewall - maybe need to remove the cap/rotor (mark wires).

Re: Oil pan gasket replacement

Hopefully you haven't done it already, but if you don't remove the nut for the trans mount, kiss it goodbye when you jack the engine up- it'll tear in half. Easy to replace, about $10 if you do smoke it.
