Advance Auto fan switch - 89 TBI
Does anyone know what temp the BWD TFS5 fan switch kicks on?
Mine was damaged during the engine swap and right now all I could afford was what Advance sells, so I bought it. I'm tired of leaving the climate control set to Max in order to keep the fan running and today forgot to put it back after using the defogger and the temp went in the red. I can't have that happening.
Advance Auto has no idea because it doesn't list the temp in their computer.

I couldn't find any onfo available either - I even searched BWD's site. I would assume it's factory setting, probably on at 230 off at 210 or something close.
You shouldn't have to set your A/C to MAX in order for the fan to run - any A/C setting would do the trick, even defrost.
I personally absolutely hate the head mounted fan switches - I never got any of them to work more than 3 months - I tried Advance, Autozone, Napa, even expensive ones from Summit - none worked longer than 3 months. I gave up and installed a seperate fan controller - they run from $30 to $100+ depending on bells & whistles. I got a Flex-a-lite from Summit, easy to wire and it's been the best $100 I ever spent. It probes the radiator fins for temps, is completely temp adjustable, has provisions for manual on/off switches, provisions for A/C, and for dual fans. I recommend it to everyone.

I had a difficult time at Advance. They kept arguing with me that there were no senders or switches in the heads and all I needed was the sensor on the intake.
3 of them and a guy in a line next to me. They said they've never heard of that before and the guy in line next to me (with that "you are wrong" tone and look) said I never heard of it either I have an 84. Does the 84 even have an electric fan?
They could not find it in the computer and swore up and down it didn't have one and I just happened to glance over and saw it on their list. He went to it, the picture popped up and I said that's it! They were baffled.
I tried explaining it to them a few times and even expressed it was smashed when changing the engine. He asked if it was the same engine and I said the heads are. I told them the sender for the gauge is on the driver's side head, the sensor for the computer is on the intake and the one on the passenger side head is the radiator fan switch.
I know where every sensor is on that car because I've had to change them in the 12 years I've owned it. Well, not the ATS.
It's not an item they normally stock and has to be ordered, otherwise I would have simply bought it online and picked it up. I'll just have to take a part number with me next time so I don't have to stand and argue with them.
Had my uncle gone in, I don't think there would of been a problem.

Oh - you know what? Some of the later cars ... the fan was controlled by a high pressure switch rather than just an "a/c on" switch - thus the fan might not come on unless there is enough pressure on the A/C line to activate it (I totally forgot about that).
But until you get it all correct again, you could just ground the wire that supposed to go to the fan switch anywhere - if that wire is grounded the fan should run regardless of the A/C as long as the key is on (then you could turn off the A/C altogether).

At least the fan comes on at Max.

I grounded the green wire that goes to the relay on both of my Camaros, and hooked it to a toggle switch under the dash. I don't let the engines get over 180. It's a good way to go.
