What camshaft for my 327?

Hello all,

I'm in need of a new camshaft for my 327...here are the current specs:

1987 IROC
327 Large Journal Bored .060
Edelbrock Performer RPM Heads
Edelbrock Performer RPM Intake
Holley 650 Double Pumper w/ Proform Main Body
Edelbrock Performer Cam
Forgot the exact pistons, but calculated 10:1 compression years ago
Roller Rockers, 1.6
5 Speed transmission, 3.23 I think?
MSD Ignition
Hooker Long Tube Headers, True Dual Exhaust with 2 Flowmaster Super 40s, no cats

My story is I built this car in high school and have been off to college for the last five years...well I'm coming home now and want to work on the car again. I know the worthless cam is the engine's achilles heel. I need something for a weekend driver, not quite strip, but more than a daily driver.

What cam do you recommend? It's been a long time since I've seen my car so I don't remember everything perfectly, but there's a good chance I could answer any questions.

Thanks

Ill get fried for saying this as its old school but that motor would love the Isky 270 megacam. Still has decent vacuum can drive anywhere sounds good and pulls very hard. Ramps arent so radical either, love the way those Iskys run.

I'll assume its not a roller block... so I'd suggest a Comp XE268 or XE274. I had an XE274 in a somewhat similar 350 a couple years ago, and it was a beast! Sounded great too.

As always, I strongly recommend you call Cam Motion and see what they spec you. I assure you that you will not be disappointed. Cam Motion is law as far as I'm concerned.

I couldn't be more displeased with Comp's XE hydraulic flat tappets... they're GARBAGE. Over the years we've had many many go flat.

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
Re: What camshaft for my 327?

Being such a small motor, you don't really so much need the larger exh lobe anyway. Prolly make more power with a single-pattern cam, and you'll need every dyne you can get, with so few inches.

The old workhorse Comp Magnum 280H is probably about good.

Those gears are KILLING you. Get some 3.73s in there. Again, with so few inches, you need ALL YOU CAN GET to be competitive.

Re: What camshaft for my 327?

Lots of dissent, I don't know which one to choose. I know the engine is small; it was a mistake. I was in high school and listened to someone else's advice on why a 327 is better than a 350. Heck, it's even a 350 block, just has a 327 large journal crank in it. The best thing I can do now is get a decent cam(he also recommended the current one I have). Any more recommendations? Thanks

Ain't nothing wrong with a 327. Can get 350 to 375 horses out of it fairly easy. What more do you need for a weekend driver
