350 oil pan swap

Hey Im swappin a new cam into the 357 and also putting in a moroso oil pan since i have to crack the old pan off anyways. I dont want to pull the motor to do the swap so am I able to swap pans just by unbolting the motor mounts and raising it as high as it will go? I just need to clear the crossmember under the pan and clear the oil pickup.
Thanks!

Re: 350 oil pan swap

I know that i used to be able to change Oil Pans in my 1986 Chevy Full Size, but that was a Truck....... A shop that i use replaced my oil pan for me. my old one looked like it was beaten to a pulp. Like it had been scraping the ground. They replaced my oil pan by lifting the engine, so i know it can be done. I just haven't done it myself.

It's possible to do with the motor in the car, not very fun...but possible. Unbolt your motor mounts (through bolts) and use a block off wood between a jack and the harmonic ballancer on the front of the engine. Or a chain and cherry picker if you have one. It is a good idea to remove the distributor cap and rotor too. On some, I've had to disconect the y-pipe from the manifolds. If you have an engine driven fan, check the clearance around the shroud when lifting the motor. A one piece gasket makes installation much easier.

Some people are able to. I wasnt. I really tried, but had to waste days pulling the engine. Of course my 350 has a big block oil pump for some reason and the pickup loops around differently.

Be carefull of what pan you try to use, most aftermarket pans won't fit our cars.

Re: 350 oil pan swap

Yeah thats why I had to swap pans immediately after first dropping my 350 in. It even had a stock-type pan, but still the sump went just a bit too far forward and blocked my y pipe.
