Replacing Carb

Hey everyone im kind of new here.. I have an 84 Camaro Berlinetta stock. I need to rebuild the carb so i decided to replace it with the Edelbrock 1406 600cfm carb. Is there any issues or anything else i would have to change or so besides the adapter plate and installing and tunning the carb? The car is pretty much all digital and there really isnt anything manual on it that i can think of. it has the sb 305 with 4bbl qjet carb in it.

Re: Replacing Carb

Most here will suggest you rebuild your Q-jet instead of buying an aftermarket carburetor.

Re: Replacing Carb

I was talking with a friend and he suggested the same and also said that the qjet is difficult to rebuild if you dont know how. The Edelbrock was given to me and i havent had the pleasure of rebuilding carbs before. He also said the qjet for a stock 305 is a great carb if rebuilt right.

Re: Replacing Carb

You cannot just slap another carb on your car, unless you are 'slapping' on another computer controlled carb.

1) you'll lose mileage and performance with any aftermarket carb alternative
2) it won't be legal for state inspection (especially if you have emissions inspection)
3) it's not federally legal - but the feds don't check
4) your stock carb is computer controlled - replacing it means you no longer can use the computer, this means the following:
5) you have to replace your computer controlled distributor with a vacuum advanced distributor
6) your torque converter in the tranny will no longer lock up, so you have to buy a lockup kit or otherwise rig a method of locking the torque converter at highway speeds
7) You'll need a TV cable geomtery corrector to keep the correct angle for the TV cable connection to the aftermarket carb

So - to switch to that Edelbrock carb, you need that adapter plate, $120 dist, $100 lockup kit that gets installed INSIDE the tranny (ie you have to remove the tranny pan) OR some other method to lock the TC, and a $20 geometry corrector for the TV cable.

So - $120 + $100 +$20 = $240. Having your stock Qjet rebuilt = $240. But the stock Qjet is a much much better choice.
