I have an engine block that has had machine work done to it. It has been bored 0.020 over. But I don't know if it has been decked. Is there any way to tell or measure? The man the block came from(personal friend) wrote down for me when I bought it that it had been bored 20 over and new freeze plugs and cam bearings. and the shop it was done at. But it dosent say anything about decking. and the man passed away last year. So I looked up the shop and found they closed the doors in 2009. So Any ideas how to find out?

 

Look for stamped numbers on the pad in front of the passenger side head. If there are numbers clearly stamped there, it hasn't been decked. If no numbers, or they look very shallow, or the machine marks look the same from the pad to the head gasket surface, it's probably been decked.

 

OK,thanks for the fast responce. I'm at work til 5 (gotta live these shop ours) but i'll check when I get home. Is there any way to determin how much has been machined off?
The reason for these questions is. I'm talking to summit to get a new rotating assembly for my block and I gave them all the info I have. And the guy wanted to know if it had been cut and how much if it was.

 

If the numbers are gone then it's been decked but there's no way of telling how much it's been decked. The best you can do is put the rotating assembly together and measure how far the piston is from the top of the deck. That's the only way to determine how much the block can be decked.

Building an engine properly means assembling and disassembling the engine a few times as measurements are taken and more machine work is done.

 

I checked it out lastnight and the numbers are still there. Don't look to be machined at all on the deck just real clean. I could clearly see all the numbers and there was no machine marks. Thanks for the help five7kid and alkyiroc
