Rear hatch pulldown problems
Hello,
I already did a search and can't seem to find an answer to my question. I have a 1986 Iroc with the rear hatch pull down. When I bought the car the person I bought it from had the rear hatch tied down because the pull down supposedly broke. I got the car home and when I opened the trunk and re-closed it, it worked fine, and never gave me a problem since... till today. The hatch pull down did not make its way to the top after i popped the hatch. Instead it got really hot and blew the fuse. I put another fuse in, and it is making a creeking sound but it is not moving up or down. The motor is getting hot. I have no idea how this thing works or how to fix it. What do you think?

You'll have to take the assembly out, tear into it, and find out why it's not turning. My guess is broken gear, or cracked housing. www.top-downsolutions.com sells replacement parts.
Sorry can't tell you much else. These are delicate things, never intended to last this long, especially with folks slamming them. And they are complex little snots as well, very hard to describe here. I just always tell folks to remove the assembly and carefully take it apart - the only real way to understand the parts/functions is to see it for yourself.

Take it apart, see if it's catching on anything! I know the guy who last owned my car spliced into the wires for the hatch motor (I assume for a "system" >:/ ) The wires were getting in the way of the motor and getting pinched. One day the whole thing just stopped working...cut through one of the wires. I don't know if it's your problem....but it's something to look for. I suppose a mouse could have made a nest back there too if it's been being stored lately for winter. Just dig into it and see if you can figure it out..they're not really too hard if I can figure them out lol
