Fan wiring diagrams?

I recently bought a 89 IROC Z Camaro, 5.7 TPI and will have a nightmare on my hands to get this thing to ever run normal. I think I'm trying to get it as close to stock as possible before doing anything else. Previous owner did not have it for long, have no history on mods, possible chip change, there's going to be a lot going on in my future here, it has a lot of issues. I am new to ThirdGen and this is my 1st third gen car. I've had this car for about 2 months. I have to start somewhere and I guess it will be the cooling fan. Someone has it wired in such a way that it comes on whenever the key is in the on position. It never shuts off. When I turn the key off it runs for about 2 seconds before shutting down. Does anyone have a diagram for how this is supposed to be wired from factory? I realize that this was done by someone for some reason and it may not come on at all when I hook it up right, but I've got to do this first to find the core problem. I'm not a total newbie to engines but I am to electronic engine systems, all of my cars before were 70's carb cars, so I've got a learning curve to conquer here, although I've been using a Voltmeter for my daytime job for 20 years and find it cool that it can tell me so much on this car. I am very good with electronics in general and can read schematics on electronic systems. Thanks in advance to anyone who might try to help.

Re: Fan wiring diagrams?

Is this a single fan car, or dual fan car?

Not sure how the fan worked on a TPI car with single fan.

On the dual fans, they are controlled independantly.

The "primary" fan is controlled by the ECM - the ECM gets temp info from the coolant temp sender that is in the intake by the thermostat - 2 wires black & yellow. I think thye primary fan should come on around 220 degrees

The "secondary" fan is controlled by the fan switch, located in pass side head between #6 & #8 spark plugs - remember, head NOT block. It has a single wire to it, looks like a mushroom connector. The stock fan switch activates secondary fan at 238 degrees. The A/C high pressure switch in the A/C line will also activate the secondary fan.

Most folks run IGN ON wiring to the fans because they are too lazy to find out why the fan doesn't come on - 99% of the time it's a fan relay (each fan has one), or the coolant temp switch, or the fan switch that's the trouble.

Here's wiring diags for almost all 3rd gens - hope it helps: http://www.austinthirdgen.org/index.php?pid=19

Re: Fan wiring diagrams?

Thank you, that diagram you sent is a LOT more than I was hoping for, especially since the fan problem is just the beginning for me, there are electrical problems all over this car and that diagram will actually help for a lot of things. Well, wish me luck.
