just pulled the head off... the one that blew the gasket...

looks like there was some coolant sitting in there a little while.. has etched the cylinder wall... what are my options on cleaning this ? i already scrubbed the wall with a paper shop towel and carb cleaner to try and get some of if off... should i take a hone to it? i can turn the crank and get the piston to BDC on that cylinder and water marks about half way up the cylinder wall.

i really dont want to disassemble the short block

 

I would try this. First get the piston at bdc like you mentioned. Then I'd made sure the cylinder is clean and dry. Then take some masking tape and go around the top of the piston to the cylinder wall so nothing can fall down between them. Then I'd take a very fine scuffing pad( light gray scotchbrite) or 000 steel wool with a little 3 in 1 oil on it and clean it up. I'd go real lightly and see if that would do it. After you're done I'd wipe the bore clean with wd40 and some lint free shop towels to get all the grit out, then blow the cylinder out good with compressed air.

Something I didn't think about but you said this is ecthed. Do you mean it's stained for lack of a better word or has it actually piited the cylinder wall? If it's pitted I doubt this will do you much good.

how far apart is it id run a ball hone threw it

 

well first i rememberd an oil trick for rust.. vinegar.. i got a shop towel, put some vinegar on it, and wiped the rust part to help break it ut. theni used 30wt oil and a mild scotch bright pad, worked it slowly and wow, worked like a charm, came off very easy.
