Title Problem help

Ok so I recently purchased an 84 Camaro and I only received the old registration and bill of sale. The car hasn't been on the road since 2004 I believe and it has a clean record (hasn't been reported lost of stolen). The person I bought it from was from Rhode Island and Rhode Island car law says you don't need a title for registering a car that age. But the car was actually last registered in Connecticut and that state law says it needs a title. What should I do to fix this problem?

I realize that i'm a dumb *** so theres no need to post and tell me that. I am looking for helpful suggestions only.

Re: Title Problem help

Sounds like you'll have to get the previous owner to file for a duplicate title, and then have him transfer title to you.

Not rubbing it in, just stating ...

A car is REAL PROPERTY just like a house - never finalize a sale without a title (just like a deed). Same applies for boats over 26ft in length - they have titles for the boat as well as for the trailer - so if it's on a trailer, then you need 2 titles (one for boat, one for trailer). Really large boats have deeds, just like a house (since there's a mortgage attached rather than a simple interest loan).

Re: Title Problem help

I'd contact your local DMV - they might send you to the CT DMV, but you should be able to apply for a title yourself. Will take longer, might have to jump through hoops, but it's possible.

Auto repair shops do it all the time, when customers leave cars to be fixed, & never pay the bill. They get a clear title (assuming no other liens are on the title), and sell the car to cover the unpaid bill. You'll probably have to pay for a lien search, and might take some time, but it's do-able.

Re: Title Problem help

Look up "Abandoned Vehicle Title" online at the DMV for your state. I had to do this with a Camaro i bought a few years back. It takes a while......

Your best bet is to contact your DMV and see what needs to be done.
