Moroso Windage Tray.. Stud Questions?
Moroso Windage Tray.. Stud Questions?
Hello, so i have a moroso windage tray, came with the car when i bought it and the crate motor, and im at the point here that im ready to install it, http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MOR-23035/
is the kit, im not going to use the crank scraper, but the tray and pump baffle will find a nice home in my block.
i need to find those studs, and moroso recomends a stud kit that i have looked for hours online to find and i cant find any place, i have found these http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MIL-81148/
would those work?
and theres 5 holes in this pan, its the flat louvered design, but question is do i need all 5 studs? or are those the correct studs?, are there cheaper studs? i just cant find the missing link to installing this tray, any help would be appreciated,
thanks

I don't know if that one will work or not; prolly will; but I can tell you, when I've used that tray in the past, I usually put it on these. http://sdparts.com/details/gm-factor...parts/14087508 The rearmost hole of the tray goes under the oil pump bolt, it'd be a good idea to buy an aftermarket oil pump bolt with a washer, to keep from defroming the tray. Be aware that the OP bolt is a SPECIAL length; it is 1-15/16"; if you run a 2" one in there, this will happen, from the bolt bottoming out into the back of the rear main bearing. You may also have to notch the tray to clear the dispstick, check BEFORE buttoning up the pan.

so how many of those factory studs do i need 4? then the OP bolt where do i get that? i want to run this tray, i just dont want to mess it up, like your pic,

I had 5 on mine, but that one looks slightly different, might only take 4; in fact in the pic the holes are even elongated to accomodate going on a 400, where I've had to lot mine out in the past... just look at what you've got though, shouldn't be too hard to decide where you need studs.
Yeah great pic, seems like somebody posted somewhere about how his motor blew up and he couldn't figure out why, and was wondering where that one weird mark on that one bearing came from. Which is probably what took the motor out.

I think ARP sells one; maybe also Milodon, Canton, and others such as that, that sell pumps. Maybe even Crower.

ok so im going to order those 4 studs for the main, but im still confused on what specific bolt i need for the oil pump? it will also have the baffle bolted in there between the pump and rear main.

Would an oil pump stud kit work good? then i can control it from bottoming out and have a little bit of adjustment in thread engagement?
i have a standard oil pump not a HV one so if i use a standard stud for the standard pump it should give enough thread engagement?or would it be recommended to get a HV stud for more reach?

A stud would probably work fine... put some Loctite on it, thread it in by hand until it touches the bearing, back it back out a bit, let it dry before putting the pump on.
A std pump and a HV one usually are the same length, until you get into aftermarket ones, which could be anything. But a M55 and M55HV for example, or even M99HVS, are the same thickness. Or for that matter, even if you put a M77 in there instead, same thickness as well.
The windage tray isn't really thick enough to affect the bolt much; just gotta avoid damaging it when you torque the OP bolt down.
I like to use lock nuts on those studs to attach the tray, BTW. I knew somebody once that used regular nuts on one once, and a couple came off; the loose tray made a REAL weird noise.
