Motor mounts NOT the source of my problem (WHAT IS???)

i took my car out for a spin today after replacing the motor mounts this weekend, and when i get on the gas i still have the same issue...

Symptoms:
-the shifter in my hand lifts up (feels like 3-4in but probably not)
-the back drivers corner of the engine lifts up (ive been driving with the hood off so i can literally see it moving, and its not a subtle shift at all)
-the car feels like its lost torque

What isnt broken:
-the motor mounts (brand new, 3 days old)
-the shells (visually inspected, and would be obvious if broken)
-the bolts going through those two pieces (also inspected and would be obviously broken)

common sence and deductive reasoning leads me to believe that its the transmission mount. (i shouldve thought of this before jumping the gun and spending time and money on the motor mounts but at least theyre done now)

Am i on the right track????

Sounds like the trans mount.

Re: Motor mounts NOT the source of my problem (WHAT IS???)

ok thanks...

now theres no way a trans mount can be as tough to tackle as those motor mounts right?

im gonna start with the $9.00 mount instead of the entire crossmember

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
Re: Motor mounts NOT the source of my problem (WHAT IS???)

Takes longer to jack the car up and crawl under it, than it does to replace the mount.

Yep, I agree on the trans mount. There is often a "Clunk" when shifting or when you get on the gas. Be careful, I've heard there are more than one mount for these cars. (I've replaced several and have yet to have this issue, myself.) they say there are more than one height (Thickness). Good luck!

I recommend going with a poly trans mount. Unless you don't mind crawling under your car once a month to replace the broken rubber one.

Re: Motor mounts NOT the source of my problem (WHAT IS???)

We'll see how the $9.00 rubber replacement holds up. If not I'll go poly. Not a big deal to crawl under. ( nothing is anymore compared to doing the engine mounts)

I'm thinking there's different sizes cause of the different transmissions that came on these cars.

Re: Motor mounts NOT the source of my problem (WHAT IS???)

That may be right, but I have heard of the parts stores having two different sizes for the same trans. I never had a problem with them, though. The rubber one should be just fine unless you run around dumping your clutch and such. For my '90 RS, I had to go solid on the trans mount, but my '86 IROC uses the factory style rubber one. Then again, I've only put around 1,000 miles on it in three years, so who knows. LOL

If you get a poly one it will outlast the car. Rubber one will break again in 6 months...

Re: Motor mounts NOT the source of my problem (WHAT IS???)

Couldn't stand the poly myself, even though my car isn't a DD. Check the following link for a comparison of ES, Prothane, and OE rubber, which will no doubt last years, depending on how the car is driven:

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tran...ison-pics.html

Note the different mounts here (if you have the secondary mount or the oil filled mount, I'd suggest swapping it for a standard, one-piece mount, OE or after market):

Re: Motor mounts NOT the source of my problem (WHAT IS???)

I think that the up and down movement from my broken old trans mount led to the tork bar mount bolts loosening, so check everything when you are under there.
