wont start, help?

hey,
my car's been sitting two weeks for repairs. i put it back together yesterday and when i tried to start it, it wouldn't. it turned on but when i cranked the key it refused to fire up.. just kept whining at me. i kept pumping but i never smelt any fuel. this is my first carbd car so i was wondering if there was something special i had to do after its been standing around for a bit in the cold. or if i should just jump it.

thanks

Re: wont start, help?

did you remove the fuel pump on the block?
was the car origanally carbed?

it takes a while for fuel to reach the carb from the tank

how long did you turn over the engine?

Re: wont start, help?

the car was originally a 305, but has since been replaced with a 383. not sure if it was carb'd or not originally.

the only work i did on the car was inside for the past two weeks. two weeks ago, it worked fine if i worked with it for about a minute.
how long do i have to pump gas into the carb for? i did about 4 really quick pumps. maybe a second in length for each.

i tried doing this for a good 2 minutes each time. (tried twice)

Check this out guys, I went to look at a paint job this guy did on a 86, well he told me he bought it with a bad fuel pump. he didn't want to drop the tank so he rigged it under the hood to the fuel hose. Crazy it worked, car starts right up every time. My only concern is i thought the pump needed to be in Gas to keep it from going bad. Hmmmm

BACK ON TOPIC:

Heyzus, if the car was origanally carbed or FI either way it would have fuel pump in the gas tank. your problem might have something to do with that. try to listen (while the ingnition is turned) for the pump running in the gas tank.

is there a fuel pressure gage on the car anywhere?
