curiousity
Just to make another point. If chevy(don't get mad yet) had taken the V-8 305 engine and made the bore larger instead of the stroke to come up with 350 CI, they use 6.6 in connecting rods. They could have feasibly made an engine that would do over 400 horse on stock cams at 5500 rpm with pump 87 OCT gas with a compression ratio of 11.5 to 1. But they didn't(morons).
just read this on my vw forum from someone who confused me with big words until i saw my good old 305 and went hmmn i just started working in a machine shop

Re: curiousity
Remember: it was the 80's when they were doing this.
Performance was not at the top of the list. Hell, was it even on the list? I mean, I loved my 305 to death, and I'm going to keep it even though I have no use for it right now other than a big 'ol paperweight, but it's a dog, and always has been.

Re: curiousity
If they did a 4" bore, it would have defeated the purpose of the 305 for emissions. Our 4" bore is a 350. IIRC, If you bored a 305 to 4", you'd ruin the block by getting into the water jacket. Less stroke would have been the 262. Less stroke on the 350 block produced the 327 and 302.
I could be wrong, but if you ran a 6.6" rod on our beloved 305, the pin would be in at least the oil rings, making oil control an oxy moron. 87 octane, 11.5:1 with GM bone stock iron heads? Sounds like a recipe for knock knock who's there detonation.
If it was that easy to build an 11.5:1 87 octane 400hp 305, you and me and countless others would have done it already.
Those silly VW guys need to stick to what color flower to put in the flower holder in their Bug
. No offense intended smgseanmicheal.
