Types of engine questions

I was thinking about putting a 350 engine in my firebird and boring it out to a 383 and putting a stroker kit on it. I have been reading alot though and can not figure out what all the types of engines mean, example would be like the ls1. Is the ls1 a 350 with a certain type of manifold on it? Any response to my question is highly appreciated as i am just starting to learn about cars.

Was also wonder the difference between tbi and tpi, i think they are different types of fuel injections but i don't really know so any help is appreciated thanks

Re: Types of engine questions

The LS1 is a popular motor in the LSx series of engines. It is not just a 350 with a different manifold - I don't know a lot about LS motors but I know they are simply a new design. I believe even the firing order of an LS motor is different that your standard SBC (small block chevy), which btw is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2.

TPI stands for Tuned Port Injection, while TBI stands for Throttle Body Injection. These were the type of intake systems our 3rd gens got during those years, with TPI being the 'better' one. Don't confuse TBI with a Carb, though. TBI is still fuel injected.

I have personally never been a fan of stroker kits, so haven't delved much into them - but IIRC if you bored out your 350 AND stroked it, you'd get more than a 383. I could be wrong, though.

Hope this helps.
